The main reason for visiting the Bale Mountains was to  try to photograph Ethiopian Wolves. We were told that the numbers were considerably down due to rabies, distemper and harassment by herders dogs so expectations were not high. Thankfully we saw and photographed them on all three days of our stay. The closest encounter was when we came across a young Wolf walking by the side of the road. We all first took pictures from the vehicles but then quietly got out and the Wolf did not seem to be concerned, in fact it crossed the road twice fairly close to us, a great experience. The biggest problem we had was heat haze so images taken at any distance were not pin sharp. This was the worst we have ever known heat haze to be such a problem probably exacerbated by the high altitude.
