JUVENILE SPARROWHAWK

As the weather was so hot and dry I decided to put out some water in the garden for the birds. Our pond was attracting lots of birds but unfortunately the pond does not get the lovely late evening light. My new drinking place consisted of the upturned lid of the compost bin buried in the vegetable patch. As soon as it went in birds came down to drink particularly the greenfinches. My day was made as I was focusing on a nuthatch when all I could see was a mass of feathers and then nothing. When I took a careful look from the hide I saw this juvenile sparrowhawk looking back at me! Unfortunately I had my long lens on and so all of the pictures are a little tight and the light wasn't great but the sparrowhawk did allow me to take about 18 pictures and change from vertical to horizontal format. A wonderful and totally unexpected encounter so close to our back door.
