Hen Harriers are found in the Uists all year round and are quite common. We were surprised to find that most of the Harriers we saw during our winter visit were male, in the summer females seem to predominate. Luckily we came across a male hunting near the road in good light.

Golden Plover were also quite numerous feeding on the Machair and were beginning to moult into their smart breeding plumage.

Lapwings were very common and some seemed to be starting their courtship display.
