We took our 500mm F4 lens on our whale watching trip and didn't use it for any whale images however we did use it a few times on land for bird images. The crew thought we were filling our camera bag with rocks and we did wonder if it was worth the effort carrying the big lens on our land trips. It proved its worth when we came across a very confiding Xantu's Hummingbird; this bird is endemic to the region.
