Long-tailed Skuas are a rare breeding bird in Iceland so we were very fortunate to be able to photograph them, even though it was a nightmare ensuring all of that extremely long tail was included in the shot. Many Whooper swans were breeding in the area and the bottom images shows why Lake Myvatn translates as midge lake- all the dots on the water are flies! These were unbearable at times so we did resort to buying some netting hats which looked ridiculous but certainly helped! The good thing was that these flies do not bite and they are the reason so many birds breed at Lake Myvatn.
