During hard winters Red-breasted Geese winter in northern Bulgaria along the Black Sea Coast but in mild winters they do not come so far south. This winter the geese did come into Bulgaria so early February saw me (Phil) in Bulgaria trying to photograph them. The first few days saw the geese roosting in Bulgaria but setting of in the morning to feed just over the border in Romania. It was certainly interesting crossing the border at 6.00am each day especially as the guards were on the look out for some recently stolen Army machine guns. After a few days the guards got to know us and were nearly friendly.
