I spent two nights in the same hide and I was rewarded with my best images both portrait and more habitat images. The first morning the male Capercaillie came within a few yards of the hide and displayed up and down a forest track off and on from 3.30am until 8 am. Sometimes he was on his own, sometimes he was chasing another male away and occasionally he was joined by at least two females. I didn't see them mate but the females were definitely interested. The second morning the male was further away down the track but I did take more habitat shots and also shots of him jumping in the air. Unfortunately even at ISO 10000 they were not sharp. Just to show how fickle this type of photography is another photographer went in the following night and didn't see anything although I wasn't sure he hadn't slept through it all!
