My local Bulgarian guide, Emil Enchev, took me to a churchyard where there were at least 25 Long Eared Owls roosting during the day. They would allow a close approach and seemed completely at ease only occasionally opening their eyes. It was a truly remarkable scene and I am sure I saw more Long Eared Owls that day than I have seen in all my bird watching days. I finished off my trip to Bulgaria with a visit to a small ski station above Sofia to see and photograph Nutcrackers, a new bird for me. They came readily for peanuts and would occasionally squabble over them. It was just a shame the light wasn't a little kinder for photography.
