We always thought that December is a winter month especially in Scotland but our trip this year coincided with warm weather and not a trace of snow. However it did make the mountain hares stand out against the brown heather although we were greatly helped by the excellent photographer Mark Hamblin. Many of the hares allowed a close approach provided you moved slowly and watched out for any signs of them becoming anxious although one or two decided they didn't like the look of three photographers approaching them with big lenses.
