Often when the ship pushed away sheets of the pack ice it disturbed Polar Cod that live under the ice sheets. The Black Legged Kittiwakes have learned to follow ships and feed on the exposed Polar Cod. We spent much of our sailing time through the ice at the back of the ship as near to water level as we could get, trying to capture the Kittiwakes flying away with the fish before they were eaten..
