The Camargue had always conjured up images of salt pans stuffed full of waders and more exotic birds so finally this March we decided to visit and see if reality matched up to our expectations. We saw many good birds, Penduline Tits, Slender Billed Gulls, Great Spotted Cuckoo for example but found it hard to get close to them for photography even using the car as a hide. The salt pans were especially disappointing with hardly a bird on them. However we visited the Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau and were pleasantly surprised to be able to get so close to wild Flamingos. The Parc feed them on a daily basis and the birds have no fear of humans and the birds will come close. almost to touching distance. Late on in the day the birds fly out to their roosting sites and by standing on a raised bridge in the Parc we obtained good flight shots against a lovely sunset.
