A week after returning from Australia, we set off to Alaska for 3 weeks to focus mainly on Landscape and Brown Bear photography. We just had time at home to download our images, mow the lawn, do the washing, repack and then we were away again. Flying to Alaska via Iceland considerably cut down the travelling time from last time I went through Detroit and the queue for immigration was also much smaller. We tried to be in Alaska for the Autumn Fall colours and also when the bears were catching Salmon as they returned to the rivers to breed. Whilst we were spot on for the colours, the fish had returned early and so the bears were sitting forlornly by the river as there were none to catch. This was obviously disappointing, both for us and the bears, nonetheless we enjoyed our few days at Silver Salmon Lodge. The bears here have not been hunted for a good many years and are used to people watching and photographing them from very close quarters. It is a tremendous thrill to be almost eyeball to eyeball with these magnificent animals and on foot, not in a hide. We flew in on the smallest planes either of us have flown in (3 of us, plus Bill our pilot).  The first morning we arrived, the weather was fabulous and one particular bear hadn't realised there were no fish and spent a good hour or so running around in the river chasing shadows.
