We visited Indonesia in 2011 but unfortunately Helen managed to break her arm so the trip was much curtailed. A repeat visit was always in the back of our minds and this March we finally went back. It was strange revisiting the scene where Helen fell and broke her arm but it laid a few ghosts to rest. This trip was in three quite distinct parts, Borneo for the Orangutans, Sulawesi for the Crested Black Macaques and the Flores Islands for the Komodo Dragons on Rinca and Komodo Islands. Each section was very different although it was hot throughout! The trip was organised by Natures Images. Most of the Orangutans we saw and all we photographed in Borneo in the Tanjung Puting Reserve were either rehabilitated ones or ones that had become habituated to humans by visiting the feeding sites. Photography was quite difficult owing to the dark and shadowy conditions and by trying to keep out signs of the food put out for them. The best pictures were when they were in the trees above the feeding platforms or by going in close with the big lens to capture portraits of the impressive Apes, especially the large males.
