The Island of Hoy in the Orkneys was a late addition to our itinerary and we were glad we visited it although we wished we'd stayed longer. It is very different from the other flatter and fertile Islands of the Orkneys and it more resembles west mainland Scotland. We saw a number of Hen Harriers but not close and the Mountain Hares we saw were not approachable as it said in the brochure! We did come across a pair of confiding Arctic Skuas which didn't try and take your head off. A particular highlight was the long but satisfying walk in the evening out  to the Old Man of Hoy. We were hoping for a glorious sunset but as is usual we were to be disappointed but we were treated to a brief glimpse of the sun which lit up the Old Man and the surrounding sandstone cliffs.
