Our first away trip after the latest easing of restrictions and school holidays was to Suffolk in a cottage close to Minsmere RSPB Reserve. This is one of the RSPB's flagship reserves but it is under threat from the proposed Sizewell C Nuclear power plant. While the plant will not be built on the Reserve the construction will have major effects on the water supply to the Reserve as well as the tremendous light pollution during the long construction phase. Judging by the number of placards many of the local residents are also opposed. We are glad we made this visit before the flagship Reserve becomes another victim of 'progress' and short sighted decision making. Back to the trip- the undoubted highlight was the unexpected Starling Roost. The number of Starlings wasn't huge but the sight of them swirling around over the scrapes against a couple of beautiful sunsets was magical, made especially memorable as we were the only two watching them on the best evenings.
