Leighton Moss RSPB Reserve in Lancashire is a place  we haven't been to in a long time and our previous visits have been all too short as they have mainly been on the way to somewhere else. We put this right with a week long stay in December in a lovely cottage very close to the Reserve. Thankfully the weather was on our side for once with unbroken sunshine except on the last morning when we had to contend with snow for our journey home. There had been reports of an obliging Bittern coming close to the public hide so we spent two very cold mornings waiting. Eventually we saw a Bittern dash across a gap in the reeds too far away for any photographs! Thankfully during one of our afternoon visits to the Lower Hide we spotted the reeds moving and couldn't believe our luck when it was a Bittern climbing to the top. Between us we think we managed some reasonable images as it took off and flew across the frozen Mere.
