Hummingbirds are usually associated with warm tropical countries but they can survive in the higher, colder and wetter regions of these countries. We were thrilled to find the endemic Buffy Helmetcrest as this is classed as vulnerable and is only found around Nevado Del Ruiz, an active Volcano in Colombia. This and the Viridian Metaltail were found in the open Paramo habitat at over 12,000 feet above sea level. The unusual looking and uncommon Rainbow-bearded Thornbill was encountered at a slightly lower elevation, around 10,000 feet.
