After having a bit of a break from photography to sort out the garden and do jobs on the house February saw us in Ethiopia on a Wildlife Worldwide photography trip expertly led by Ben Cherry. We visited the Simien Mountains primarily for the Geladas, Lalibela for the unique rock hewn churches and the Bale Mountains for Ethiopian Wolves. We were successful at each location although non surprisingly the Wolves were the hardest. Our first stop was at the Simien Lodge, allegedly the highest lodge in Africa, ideally placed for Gelada viewing. Our first encounter was all of two minutes from the lodge! The Gelada feed during the day on grasses and roots on the Simien plateau and are entirely used to people which made the photography so much easier although walking quickly at this altitude was certainly a challenge. The male Gelada is certainly a handsome beast with its long fur and large canines.
