Viewing Polar Bears in their ice kingdom must rank high on anybodies wildlife experience and to get so close to photograph them was even better. Over the course of the trip we encountered a dozen bears although not all were photographable.  Once we had spotted a bear it was up to the captain, with helpful advice from the tour leader, to get us close enough for photographs. The Polar Pioneer was ideal for the job being small enough to be reasonably maneuverable, as ships go, and ice strengthened so it could break through reasonably thick ice especially when both engines were used. Trying to get everybody in a good position with tripods and camera bags on the side of the ship tasked everybody's patience and forbearance with some having more than others!  Most of the bears we encountered seem to be 'interested' in the ship, or was it us, and came close enough for good photographic opportunities.
