In the Galapagos there are two species of Frigatebird, Great and Magnificent, which are difficult to differentiate between. Adult male Great Frigatebirds have a green sheen on their backs while Magnificent ones have a purple sheen. You certainly need to be close and view the birds in good light to tell the difference. Both species harass other birds to drop or regurgitate food and will also scavenge from the land and from the sea surface. They were a common sight during our recent rip to the Galapagos and like most of the wildlife completely fearless of us. During breeding the male inflates its throat sac or gular and will sit for hours displaying and occasionally throwing its head back.
