During our day with the Spanish Ibex in the Gredos Mountains we had seen and heard occasional bursts of males fighting but hadn't managed to photograph the spectacle. Late in the day we heard fighting and this lasted for quite a while allowing us to get close enough for photography. The background was very photogenic but to get the best angle it meant perching on a very small but high rock in the middle of the river. I could have done with being a bit further away as I had trouble keeping both animals in the frame even though I was at the shortest end of the 100-400mm lens. The fighting was fantastic to see especially as I thought we had missed our chance and felt privileged to have a ring side seat. Eventually one of the males retreated and was seen away from the herd by the victor.
