Our second visit to a village during our trip to PNG  was to the Mud Men. The story was they were pushed out of their lands by a larger tribe and, to get their land back, they made masks from dried mud which made them look like spirits. The dance they performed was reenacting them going back to scare off their original attackers. The mud masks were incredibly heavy and one of them wore lengths of Bamboo on their fingers which, when snapped together, made a very evocative sound. The villagers also put on their ceremonial dress including Bird of Paradise headdresses.
