At the end of our Galapagos trip in 2016 we had a day into the cloud forest which whetted our appetite to see more of the many birds we encountered and to be able to identify them more easily. To achieve this we booked on a Glenn Bartley Ecuador trip which was led by Jess Findlay. For those who don't know Jess, he is 26 and looks about 16 but he is extremely knowledgeable about the birds of the region and is a great photographer and leader. Our first stop was at Sani Lodge on the Napo River, a mighty tributary of the Amazon in eastern Ecuador. One of the many highlights here was a visit to a clay lick visited by Scarlet Macaws and Cobalt-winged Parakeets. The hide looked more like a concrete war bunker with capacity for around 100 people. However the birds didn't seem to mind it and provided you could get to the front it was fine for photography. In this area we had to work with slow shutter speeds and high ISO's as much of the photography was in forest areas. The fees to use the hide brought welcome income to the local communities which hopefully will stop any poaching for the pet trade.
