Our second trip in 2019 saw a complete change in temperature, from the heat of Ecuador to the extreme cold of Northern Finland and Norway. The coldest we encountered was -29oC which is the cold side of brass monkeys! Our trip was well organised by Shetland Wildlife and started at a small lodge in Northern Finland where food was put out for the winter birds. The highlight here were the very tolerant Pine Grosbeaks, a large and colourful bird. Once the birds had got used to where we were putting the food out it was a delight to photograph them so close to the lodge as once we got too cold we could retreat inside for a cup of tea and a warm.
