Having had a recent run of photographic trips abroad we settled on the Orkneys for our main summer trip this year. As it is long way from Gloucestershire and we hadn't been, before we put together a months itinerary covering a number of the Islands. As with any visit to a new destination, no matter have much you search on the internet or ask for advice, you always seem to stay too long at certain places and not enough time at others. This was indeed the case on this trip. We spent the first week on Westray Island which was much too long as it was basically one big farm with very little room for any wildlife. We were grateful for the RSPB reserve at Noup Head where we ended up most evenings  when it wasn't raining too much! It probably didn't help that the weather was very cold and wet most of the time and our accommodation was also cold, thank goodness we took a small fan heater with us! Noup Head had the typical seabirds, lovely lichen covered rocks and nobody else around which was great for our photography. Fulmars were everywhere on the Orkneys and at Noup Head we particularly liked trying to take images of them flying against the cliffs with their shadows.
