From West Mainland we then visited North Ronaldsay using the very efficient Orkney Ferries. We were surprised though when the car had to be hoisted off the ferry onto the jetty at North Ronaldsay. Thankfully it was all done with great professionalism and all our possessions, including most of the camera gear didn't end up at the bottom of the harbour! We stayed in a lovely house very close to  the Bird Observatory who were very helpful. North Ronaldsay is only a small Island, around 4 miles north to south but we were glad to have the car to carry our gear when we visited the North of the Island although it would be possible without the car. Many rare birds are seen on North Ronaldsay  although there wasn't anything unusual during our brief stay. We really enjoyed our 4 day visit and wished we had stayed longer. One of the distinctive features of the Island is the sheep wall built all around the Island to keep the sheep off the fields most of the year. Consequently the sheep live mainly on seaweed and it is a bit odd to see lots of sheep clambering over the rocks to get to their food. Our house overlooked Nouster Bay which was full of Terns, Fulmars and Common Seals so we didn't have to go far for our photography.
