The Avalon Marshes in Somerset are only a couple of hours drive away from us in the Forest of Dean but after every day trip we have always felt we should have been there earlier or stayed later so at the end of the latest and hopefully last lockdown, we booked a cottage within 10 minutes of Ham Wall/Shapwick Heath Nature Reserves The cottage was great and ideal for our photography trip. It is a testament to the hard work put in by many organisations and individuals that the area has become so productive for so many species. The star one on our visit was the Great Egret, almost the commonest bird and very easy to see and photograph even from the expanded RSPB car park. We were blessed with almost perfect weather and the light over Shapwick Heath in the morning couldn't have been better.
