Scaup are a rare winter visitor to the UK but there were many breeding at Lake Myvatn. Red necked Phalaropes were found on every available patch of water, these tiny waders feed by catching insects as they swim on the water. They are unusual in that the female is the more brightly coloured of the two and the male does all the incubating of the eggs and rearing of the chicks.
