Many rare birds have been recorded on St Kilda, presumably having strayed out of their normal range and then finding a lump of rock in the middle of the ocean to rescue them, the Snowy Owl we saw on St Kilda being a case in point. A rare bird for St Kilda, but not of course for the UK, was the Tufted Duck that had taken up residence on a small artificial pond by the construction site. Every time we passed this pond the Tufted Duck was swimming around eating flies from the surface of the water. We would assume the duck would have to leave St Kilda to survive the winter. There were also plenty of Wheatears around, a more normal summer visitor to St Kilda with many busy feeding large chicks.
